During August - September 2025, the dynamic of demonstration situation in Jakarta and other regions are spotted light. The demonstrators demands the government to take an actions about law enforcement, a well being civic space and good governance. In the other circumstances, the rate of nine basic commodities or “Sembako” is rising up, regarding to the uncertain situation. The data about Sembako’s rate list is here

“Ensure a living wage of workers (including designers/artists)” is one of 17 demands plus 8, based on demonstrators wishlist. It related to the decline of democratic atmosphere since a up number of cases of government officers invade civilian space with unappropriated actions. It feel insecure for civilian.
For example, Ridwan (44 yo) is an art teacher in one of a high school in Bandung. Since 2021, he was shocked got the diabetes diagnosis. Then, his legs was an amputee, and he dismissed from his job as a teacher. There is no support from the place where he works. Is Ridwan has a right to complain? To whom? It secure?

19-20 October 2025
Pasar Seni ITB ( ITB art market) being held after 10 (or 11) year absence. Pasar Seni ITB serves as a melting pot for buyers and artists. Is not only to buy art things but also to response to on going circumstances : the economy fluctuations and how do the creative industry becomes a measurable way solution for artist/designer welfare. Is an idealistic way.
Me personally, is hoping, this kind of event being held every time. Art/ design has also occurred in the fields of economics, politics, and our daily life. The Art market itself can be a model for a “wake up call for action” about public facilities (transportation & waste), digital literacy, and social welfare (refer to Ridwan case).

There’s a few questions:
1. How’s about critical thinking? It is safe to speak out about social justice in our country?
2. What government scheme to support artist?
3. How do artists, who are self employed, disabled, irregular income, to get social welfare system?

Despite of the festive ambience of “art market”, the well being of artists/designers is important. Salute for the Pasar Seni ITB’s committee who create this legendary event comes true amidst the “challenging” situation in our country.
