We went to Lombok on October, 2018. It took 5 hours from Mataram city to Jelantik village, at the northern side of the island. More than 90 % of buildings in this village was collapsed by quake. No electrical, lack access to water, inadequate sanitation is also a problem. The rivers near the village are drying up. What a situation! (Fyi: from October to may is a dry season in Lombok)
So, we keep the basic principles for survival: a pack of energy bars and long lasting bread, freshwater, first aid, signaling (match and flashlight), wet tissues, and....the shelter. We used musholla (small mosque) and a tent as a shelter during those time.
October, 09. After morning pray (more than 90% of Lombok population are muslim), we discussed quickly about the design with the villagers. We tried to give the best possible solution at the time. And the villagers gave us much more ideas. we learn a lot from them. At the moment some of our design have been realized but not the entire ones. And all the rest is about the spontaneous collaboration between inhabitants.
2 hours later, we started to clean the existing land. Dig and burn the traces, branches, and grass! At the moment we did create a front yard. The collaboration allows the villagers to put their ideas and characters to come out through the yard. In order the building to put the light steel wall as a fascade. The light steels was donated by some vendor. The main entrance made from teak block and finished with yellow painted. The roof made from fiber.
For electrical we used two unit of 60 watts solar panel. On the main entrance, in order to give a building more distinct identity we we had added the mural from duct tape. The concept of the mural taken from the arabic sentences "bismillah" (in the name of god/Allah). The duct tape is very helpful. Not only for the mural but also for design and built. For the accent, we did not want it to be something very graphic. We did it through a play a vertical and horizontal lines.
