The Importance of Essence

Lombok 2018. 

This "architecture" does not fit into particular look or style. It is a thing that is born from collaboration between me (studio #mugibagja), #forumindonesiamuda, and the Jelantik villagers, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara...and we are called ourselves "the team".  

Desa Jelantik, they are affected by an earthquake on Lombok in 2018. Approximately 95 percent buildings in this village was collapsed. So many people become victims. Especially children and elders. in the context of post disaster, the children were need a playground for healing therapy. 

"The team" started to design and built quickly. It was a bit like a challenge to us then. Honesty, I did not know the kind of situation. There are so many questions: What is about the children? how about the villagers psychology situation? How about the sanitary? electrical? water? How to build? What is the material? 

I understand -a little bit- the appeal of mitigation design. Panic? Yes it is, but I like everything to be calmer. The requirements of existing data about the current situation are urgently needed. So, at the day before goes to Lombok, we were discussing about the priorities: 

1. How to explain the project to the villagers? First step is did a meeting with the elders about the design concept, timeline, and existing budget. 

2. How is about the material? We used bamboo (local plant) as a primary for the construction and the addition are fiber, mining rope, cements, and light steels. (for the context of donation, they were a bunch of material donation from a several light steel producers). 

3. How is about the design and built? We did a collaboration between villagers

All steps documented in an A1 sized paper with #graphicrecording method

Fortunately, we are finished the design and send to Lombok in same day. And people goes to followed the design on the next day
